Preventing coating failures starts long before the first layer of paint is applied.

Proper surface preparation is the foundation of every durable coating system. When a coating fails prematurely, the root cause is often hidden in the preparation process rather than in the paint itself.

At first glance, a coating failure may look simple. In reality, even a very small detail can influence the final result. That is why surface preparation should always be treated as a controlled and measurable part of the process, not only as a step before painting.

Before any conclusion is made, several questions should be answered:

🔹 Was the required surface cleanliness according to ISO 8501-1 actually achieved?
🔹 Was the surface profile suitable for the selected coating system and was it measured?
🔹 Were soluble salts checked according to ISO 8502?
🔹 Was dust contamination controlled before coating?
🔹 How much time passed between blasting and coating application?

Just as important are the application conditions themselves. Dew point, relative humidity and substrate temperature can all influence adhesion and coating performance. The risk of flash rust or secondary contamination must also be considered, especially when there is a delay between blasting and painting.

Without these data, it is very difficult to identify the true cause of a coating failure. A visual inspection alone is usually not enough. The good news is that almost all of these parameters can be measured, recorded and evaluated.

This is where modern surface preparation becomes much more than just blasting. It becomes a controlled technical process. Proper documentation and process monitoring make it possible to compare results, identify deviations and prevent recurring problems.

This is also why I see a strong future in automation and digitalization of surface-treatment processes.

A very good example is the robotic surface-treatment line at TATRAVAGONKA a.s. in Poprad, which I had the opportunity to see personally. Automation does not only improve productivity — it also increases process stability, repeatability and control. These are exactly the factors that help reduce variability and improve long-term coating quality.

Surface treatment quality does not start with paint. It starts with a controlled process.

And this is exactly where Abrasives One s.r.o. can help — with expertise in blasting, abrasives, process optimization and practical surface preparation support directly at the customer’s site.

Our goal is not simply to supply abrasive material. We focus on the complete process: choosing the correct abrasive, understanding the blasting equipment, evaluating surface preparation requirements and supporting the customer in improving quality, productivity and process stability.

One source. One supplier. One solution.
